| NAAAP-Houston 2006 College Scholarship Program Winners Announced! |

Congratulations to the three winners of NAAAP-Houston's 2006 College Scholarship Program: Daniel Hwang, Henry Tsai, and Eric Sung. Mr. Hwang, as the Grand Prize Winner, will receive $1000 to attend the University of Texas at Austin this fall, and Mr. Tsai and Mr. Sung will each receive $500 to respectively attend Stanford University and the University of Texas at Austin.
Read below for biographies on each of these three outstanding students!
Daniel Hwang
Mr. Hwang is a 2005-2006 valedictorian (Rank 1 of 475) of Stratford High School. Mr. Hwang founded and led Youth for Government, a civic education organization that provides high school students a unique opportunity to become acting state legislators, lobbyists, lawyers, and committee chairs while simulating all phases and positions that the actual state government calls for. Mr. Hwang organized a charity concert featuring many local high school bands, including his band Searching for Something, that raised over $11,000 for Hurricane Katrina victims. In addition, he was selected to participate in the UIL Region 23 Symphonic Orchestra for four consecutive years. Mr. Hwang is active in the Asian American community, including participating in the annual Youth Leadership Conference.
Mr. Hwang will join the Engineering Honors Program at the University of Texas at Austin this fall. He plans to become a patent lawyer.
Henry Tsai
Ranking 8th out of 694 students at Bellaire High School, Mr. Tsai has achieved extraordinary accomplishments for such a young individual. As a leader of the Bellaire Debate Team, he was a Double Octo Finalist at the Debate Nationals. He was also four times selected for Texas Math and placed 15th at the Chess Nationals. In addition, Mr. Tsai is a 3-time world finalist for Odyssey of the Mind.
Mr. Tsai will attend Stanford University this fall and, after having completed an internship at PriceWaterhouseCoopers, plans to become a consultant.
Eric Sung
Mr. Sung is a 2005-2006 valedictorian (Rank 1 of 475) of Stratford High School. He is one of 7 individuals in the state of Texas to make a perfect score on the new SAT. A Presidential Scholar Nominee and Semi-Finalist, Mr. Sung served as his school's Senior Class President. He is also a National Merit Semi-Finalist and works part-time as a rock climbing instructor. Active in the Asian American community, Mr. Sung is an SAT tutor at the Chinese Community Center and was also a volunteer for the Tim Shen campaign.
Mr. Sung will start his double major in Business Honors and Plan II at the University of Texas at Austin this fall. He plans to become an investment banker and then pursue his MBA.
About the NAAAP-Houston College Scholarship Program
This year, NAAAP-Houston received a record number of applications. The candidates were stellar and included many valedictorians, saludatorians, nationally ranked academic and community service champions, and other highly accomplished students. The competition for this award has been intense, and NAAAP-Houston thanks all of the applicants and finalists for participating in this year's program.

Our 2007 College Scholarship Program will be bigger and better than ever! The 2007 College Scholarship Program application will be posted in January 2007. Senior high school students of Asian-Pacific descent are eligible for the three $1,000 college scholarship awards. All current high school seniors of Asian Pacific descent, enrolled in a high school within the Houston Metropolitan area, expecting to graduate in the year 2006, are eligible to apply. The Houston Metropolitan area includes: Harris, Fort Bend, Waller, Chambers, Liberty, and Montgomery counties. |
